What Is Good Management Practice (GMP)?

Good Management Practice (GMP) is basically a very strict system that ensures pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic products are consistently produced and maintained according to set quality standards.

 Its main objective is to minimize risks such as adulteration, cross-contamination, and mislabelling associated with the manufacturing, processing, and packaging of products so that the consumer as well as the marketplace is not exposed to anything harmful or life-threatening.

5Ps of GMP

Now, GMP ensures that the quality of the product is managed by emphasizing on the five key elements, popularly known as the 5Ps of GMP- People, Premises, Processes, Products, and Procedures.

Once all of the five Ps are followed properly, there is a sixth P…. and that is Profit! Let’s take a brief look below:

1) People

First of all, the people engaged in manufacturing industries should be properly trained. Their responsibilities should be made clear. Employees’ performance should be assessed regularly and they must know how to follow the procedures.

The GMP of a manufacturing company must be strictly adhered to. As such, it is also the manufacturer’s responsibility to repeatedly review the production process so that the training of the employees can be enhanced.

2) Procedures

GMP requires the manufacturer of a manufacturing company to document and record each and every process. All procedures involved must be laid bare and followed to them. In case there is any deviation from the procedure, it must be thoroughly investigated and reported.

If there is any problem with a batch, then it can easily be detected as all the procedures have been documented.

3) Products

Products refer to the final products sold as well as the raw materials involved in the manufacturing of the products. Specifications for raw materials, components, and intermediate and finished goods must be made clear at every stage of manufacture.

Standard methods must also be followed for packing, testing, and sampling of the products.

4) Premises and Equipment

GMP requires for the equipment used in the manufacturing facilities to be continuously validated and assessed.

The manufacturing companies must clearly give records of the cleaning procedures and the conditions of the equipment and the premises.

It also requires for the regulations of the surrounding area, water, and waste disposal system to be followed.

5) Processes

Another principle that GMP implements is a continuous improvement. This applies to processes as well as the other Ps.  Processes are required to be defined, evaluated, and documented.

The manufacturer must be clear with all the processes and should also be available for self-inspection to facilitate further potential improvements. Compliance must be made provable to an audit.

Once all the five Ps are followed successfully, then comes a sixth P and that is Profit.

GMP ensures that a manufacturing company shows compliance with regulations and ensures that the products are fit for use. As such, it brings the company to the image of one which is not shady and follows proper legal instructions.
